Yun's Story

Yun Keun (fondly referred to as “Yuhn”) is a husband, brother, son, uncle, cousin, friend, cook, basketball fan, and so much more. He was recently diagnosed with the extremely rare condition histiocytic sarcoma, which is a blood cancer that also reveals itself in tumors on tissue and bone. He needs a bone marrow transplant for a chance at remission and/or a cure. In order to keep the cancer at bay while he waits for a donor match, he is currently undergoing consecutive rounds of chemotherapy treatment in Philadelphia, PA. Chemo is not a fun experience, especially with consistent complications that include challenges with his transplanted kidney and atrial fibrillation.

As an Asian person, Yun's chances at finding a match are low because Asians are not well represented on the international bone marrow registries (more specifically, Korean people). In order to get more people signed up and thus increase his chances at finding a match, Yun's family and friends have relied on in-person drives and social media to publicize the need for ALL ethnicities to join the registry. Yun has been enduring grueling rounds of chemotherapy, but he feels bolstered by the support from friends and strangers and from the knowledge that his story might help other people in need of a bone marrow transplant.
